About me

Zheng Qing

I am a senior undergraduate in Electrical Engineering at Purdue University. My research interests are in robotics, control, state estimation, autonomous systems, and perception, with current work involving state estimation and predictive control for ground vehicles.

I have experience with experimental hardware, quantum-optics instrumentation, and PCB design. I like knowing why something works, not just that it does. Having built parts of the sensor and hardware chains that measurements come from, my instinct when an estimate goes wrong is to trace the error back to its physical source before reaching for a more sophisticated filter. That habit—connecting sensing, modeling, estimation, and control—is the main perspective I bring to robotics research.

Outside of research, I enjoy meeting people from different backgrounds. I am curious about how people arrive at different interests and ways of thinking, and a conversation could give me a new way to look at myself. At Purdue, I help organize career-related events for the Chinese Students and Scholars Association, which has given me opportunities to connect with companies from different industries. I value these interactions not simply for networking, but for the stories and perspectives behind them.

Selected Projects

3D Vehicle Dynamics State Estimation and NMPC Trajectory Tracking
TypeSenior Design — 2026, in progress
AdvisorProf. Ziran Wang, Purdue Digital Twin Lab
StackC++, ROS 2, Linux, Docker
SitePurdue University, West Lafayette, IN

Porting TUM FTM's 3D vehicle dynamics estimator — a 3D point-mass EKF supported by a single-track UKF — from a race car onto a research vehicle with a weaker sensor set, then closing the loop with an NMPC trajectory tracker so that the cost of estimation error can be measured rather than assumed.

A Strategy-Driven Multi-Agent Control Framework for Autonomous Racing
TypePurdue VIP ARES Control Team — Spring 2026
AwardITS Michigan Scholar Award — undergraduate winner, CCAT Global Symposium poster competition
SitePurdue University · University of Michigan

A layered strategy / planning / execution architecture for multi-agent racing. The low-level controller was carried through PID, ADRC, LQR and finally MPC, once the objective had to trade tracking error and control effort against strategy-dependent priorities. Team technical report, not peer-reviewed.

Ortho-Mosaic Reconstruction from UAV Imagery under an Unreliable Pose Model
TypeResearch — Jul 2026, ongoing
LabPurdue Airlab
StackPython, OpenCV
SitePurdue University, West Lafayette, IN

A stitching pipeline for drone survey imagery — 1,145 frames across eleven flight strips into a 99-megapixel mosaic — where onboard heading and GNSS cannot serve as pose ground truth. Benchmarking showed the imagery survives stitching essentially intact; the residual error belongs to a pose model with no per-frame heading and no scale, and seam artefacts follow the baseline between frames rather than the time between them.

Current-Control Module for a Magneto-Optical Trap
TypeSURF Research Fellowship ($6,500 granted) — Summer 2025
ScopePCB design, thermal management, Hall-probe validation
SitePurdue University, West Lafayette, IN

A current-control box for the trap's magnetic coils, built end to end — board, fan-cooled enclosure, closed-loop test with a Hall probe. Presented as a poster and technical paper at the SURF Summer Symposium.

SoCET — SRAM and Clock Design
TypePurdue SoCET VIP, Circuit Design Team — 2024–25
ScopeLTspice, Cadence Virtuoso, SystemVerilog, KiCad, RISC-V in C
SitePurdue University, West Lafayette, IN

Circuit and RTL work on a student system-on-chip: SRAM and clock design, FSMs in SystemVerilog, PCB layout, and embedded drivers on a RISC-V core. Presented at the Spring Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Presenting at undergraduate research symposia.

Hardware Designs

VGA Pong on FPGA
TypeECE 270 Digital System Design, five-person team — Spring 2025
AwardBest Project, ECE 270 Digital System Design
StackSystemVerilog, Pico-ICE FPGA
SitePurdue University, West Lafayette, IN

A real-time Pong in RTL: the VGA timing generator (640×480 at 60 Hz), the pixel rendering module, and FSM-based game logic with collision detection, taken through simulation, synthesis and hardware debugging.

Adjustable-Filter Speaker
TypeAnalog breadboard build
SitePurdue University, West Lafayette, IN

An audio stage driving a small speaker, with high-pass and low-pass filtering whose cutoffs are set by hand — so what each filter does to a signal is heard directly rather than read off a scope.

Heartbeat Detector
TypeAnalog breadboard build
SitePurdue University, West Lafayette, IN

An LED shines through a fingertip and a photoresistor on the far side picks up the small change in transmitted light with each pulse. The signal is amplified and filtered on the breadboard and drives a second LED, which blinks in time with the heartbeat.

Breathing LED — Two 555 Timers
TypeAnalog breadboard build
Parts2 × NE555, potentiometer, RC network, LED
SitePurdue University, West Lafayette, IN

Two 555 timers: one runs slowly and sets the breathing rate, the other shapes that into a fade that ramps the LED up and down. A potentiometer on the first timer makes the rate adjustable by hand.

Other Experience

Undergraduate Teaching Assistant
TypeElmore Family School of ECE — May 2026 to present
CoursesECE 20875 Python for Data Science (Fall 2026) · ECE 20001 Electrical Engineering Fundamentals I (Summer 2026)
SitePurdue University, West Lafayette, IN

Two core EE courses. ECE 20875 covers Python alongside sampling, hypothesis testing, regression with regularisation, clustering and classification — the same statistics that sit under state estimation. ECE 20001 is the introductory circuits course, with a cohort of about 300: DC and AC analysis, first-order transients, diode and transistor fundamentals.

PUCSSA — Career Development
TypeMinister, Chinese Students and Scholars Association — Sept 2025 to present
SitePurdue University, West Lafayette, IN

Résumé workshops, mock interviews, career fairs, and getting alumni in a room with students — with companies including Midea, Eli Lilly and Huaqin.

Flairmicro — Digital IC Design and Packaging
TypeEngineering intern — Aug to Sept 2023
SiteFuzhou, China

Bluetooth modules for automotive applications; digital IC packaging, layout optimisation, and production-line ESD compliance.

Lorentz Water Wheel: A Classic Demonstration of Chaotic System
TypeSummer Undergraduate Research Fellowship poster — Summer 2023
SiteXi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Suzhou

A physical Malkus–Lorenz water wheel built and tracked on video to reproduce the Lorenz system's sensitivity to initial conditions — trajectories that diverge from a 0.01 change in starting angle — and to work out why the wheel would not sustain rotation. Four-person team.

Green or Gray? Which Countries are Killing the Planet and Which Ones are Saving It
TypeInterdisciplinary Contest in Modeling, Problem F — Feb 2023
AwardHonorable Mention
TeamZheng Qing, Honglai Jin, Tairan Zhou
